My wife came here wanting to support local businesses.
When she walked in, her first impression was, "This is anything I can get at the supermarket bakery down the street."
Nevertheless, she bought 4 pastries, to support the local establishment.
They were not good.
The cookies were like burned cake batter cookies.
The turnovers were Sahara dry, with a bare essence of filling.
The service was prompt and polite.
We wish them well.
Closed.
No longer in business.
Dead in the water.
1/13/24 was the last day of business.
Closed.
Went by there on 2/21/24.
Empty shop, no sign.
Fewer and fewer options for music stores in this county.
I stand by my previous review. Beautiful performance space, excellent acoustics, excellent sight lines.
A world class facility, worthy of world class performers.
I finally made it to the Hylton Performing Arts Center, when the incomparable Richard Thompson performed here as a last minute billing.
The foyer is handsome. We were able to enjoy a beer and a glass of wine before the show. The selection of beer was kind of weak, but it was cold. The house wine was the same that they had across the street at the Thai restaurant, for two dollars less a glass. The ushers and docents were polite and friendly to a fault.
The auditorium itself is very visually appealing. The sightlines are very good, and the acoustics are outstanding. Even the great RT complimented us on our beautiful building.
I certainly hope that the Hylton center will book more artists like this in the future. It truly is a great place to see a show.
Hmmm...,
We've been back to The Hog Shack a few times, but we've pretty much removed it from our takeaway rotation.
It's not that the food is bad; it's certainly palatable. It's just not very...,Barbecue. You will not find bark, smoke rings, or a hint of smoke in any of the meats you get. This 'cue does not satisfy.
As an aside, I drive down this road every day, sometimes multiple times. I have never caught a whiff of smoke. Ever.
3.5 stars.
Takeaway Friday.
Newest, and closest BBQ joint to my abode.
I ordered the family meal for 6-8 people.
One rack of ribs,
Two quarter chickens,
One pound of burnt ends,
Three large sides,
Corn muffins and eight cans of soda.
I also ordered an extra order of onion rings.
First, the good:
The service; 5 stars. The girls behind the counter were friendly and professional. My order was packed very carefully, as well.
The sides; 5 stars. The coleslaw was on point; not too wet, not too dry. The greens, likewise.
The elote corn was outstanding. We've never had it before.
I will reserve judgement on the cornbread , because nobody in the house likes cornbread in general.
Now for the complicated part.
The meats, 3 stars.
The burnt ends, 4 stars. We all liked them, but they didn't seem like burnt ends. More like pot roast. Tasty, but not what I expected.
The ribs, 4 stars. Nice smoke, came off the bone easily enough, and still had some chew to them.
The chicken, hmmm, 2.5 stars. They were done, but no smoke, no flavor.
The half smokes were half smokes. No complaints.
I would praise the onion rings, but they had a severe shortcoming; the foam clamshell.
Styrofoam clamshells are the bane of takeaway existence. Any crispy food is destined to turn into a soggy mess by the time you get it home.
Done with the criticism.
We will be back, and we look forward to improvements as they grow into their new home. Welcome to the neighborhood, Hog Shack!
